Snell Real Estate: SCUBA Diving Tips – Cabo San Lucas Activities

January 27, 2011

With its crystal blue water and expansive variety of undersea life, Cabo San Lucas is a treasure trove for SCUBA divers. While your SCUBA certification training will give you the safety information, instructions and experience you need, here are a few tips to make exploring the underwater world easier when you’re ready to take the plunge!

Equalize. Before you go under water, close your mouth, pinch your nostrils closed and gently blow through your nose to pre-pressurize your ears. Start your decent feet first, equalize when your head goes underwater, and continue every few feet.

Use weights. Since the Sea of Cortez is saltwater, its density requires more weight to dive than freshwater. On the plus side, the water temperature ranges from 61′F – 75′F, allowing for a thinner bodysuit, which adds less positive buoyancy.

Be still. Flailing around consume more air – and also frightens the fish! Instead, keep your hands to your sides or extended in front of you, and glide smoothly forward using your fins.

Stay horizontal. When you’re vertical, you encounter greater water resistance and consume more air. Position yourself horizontally, kicking to propel yourself forward, not upward.

Relax. If a sudden surge causes you to feel seasick, take a deep breath, and move with the motion of the water. If that doesn’t help, stay calm and abort the dive.

Keep diving! Practice makes perfect, and the more you dive, the more comfortable you’ll be – and the more rewarding your experience will become.

Our Favorite Local Mexican Restaurants

December 20, 2010

When you spend your Mexico vacation in sunny Las Cabos, at some point move the party off the beach and head into town to sample some of the amazing local food. You’ll find many down-home restaurants in the area that serve fresh, delicious, authentic Mexican fare. Here are some of our favorites, from the team at Snell Real Estate:

1) Mi Casa. As one of the longest-tenured restaurants in Cabo, this place offers you old world charm and some truly great food to go along with it. The Chicken Mole in particular comes highly recommended.

2) La Fonda. Chef Christopher Chong really knows what he’s doing here, and he is busy creating some of the most deliciously authentic Mexican dishes you are going to find anywhere in the world. This place is a little off the beaten track, but the effort to get there well worth it. Once you do arrive, start the festivities off with the Queso Fundido with Chorizo. It’s the stuff a foodie’s dreams are made of.

3) Javier’s Cantina & Grill. This is five-star Mexican dining, with exquisite gourmet food in a breathtakingly beautiful setting and an elegant atmosphere. The third of well-known chef Javier Sosa’s establishments (the others are in Southern California), Javier’s Cantina & Grill excels in every possible way. For a world-class Mexican dining experience and a night out that you won’t soon forget, Javier’s is the place to go.

Cabo San Lucas — Home for the Holidays

December 14, 2010

If you enjoy visiting Cabo San Lucas for golf, fishing or soaking up the sun, perhaps you’ve dreamed of spending the holidays at the tip of Baja California.  Imagine a season filled with warm traditions, rich celebrations and local color, and you’re already anticipating what it’s like to call Cabo San Lucas “home for the holidays.”

The weather is the first reason for northerners to celebrate.  Temperatures in December and January are in the 70s during the day and the 50s at night.  You’ll need just a sweater to take in “Las Posadas,” candlelit processions that travel from home to home during several evenings before Christmas.

It’s a delight to shop in Cabo for gifts of the season.  Explore the town’s plazas and alleyways and discover handcrafts for friends, silver jewelry for someone special and trinkets just for fun.  For the finest in sophisticated boutiques, travel down the road to the famed Palmilla.  Cabo San Lucas’s neighbor, San Jose del Cabo, is home to this legendary resort community including the upscale Shoppes at Palmilla.

Treat yourself to a stay at one of the exclusive resorts in Cabo San Lucas, or, better yet, give yourself the ultimate gift of luxury–a villa at Punta Ballena, developed by Snell Real Estate. Choose a private, oceanfront residence or a penthouse condominium with a sweeping view of the water.  Tear yourself away to stroll two miles of walking paths, play a round of tennis and visit the “residents only” beach club.

With summer coming to a close, it’s not too early to start planning a holiday vacation in Cabo San Lucas.  This unique destination just might be the place where you find holiday joy like never before.

Organic Farmers’ Markets in Cabo San Lucas

September 29, 2010

Treat your family to fresh, local, organic produce in Cabo San Lucas.

Any discussion of shopping in Cabo San Lucas must include the open-air markets of Los Cabos. These community markets are spiced with Mexican flavor, hand-made goods, and bountiful produce from local, organic farms.

Thanks to the area’s rich farming history – and the hard work of the Del Cabo Cooperative (a farming cooperative founded in 1985) – Baja California Sur boasts 400 organic farms, growing the “best organic produce anywhere” (www.delcabo.com). Fruit, vegetables and herbs are grown organically and sustainably on small family farms, spanning the fertile valleys of the Baja Peninsula.

You can find these organic treats in many Cabo San Lucas restaurants and local Farmers’ Markets, some of which are open throughout the year. One of the biggest local markets is the Organic Farmers’ Market in Cabo San Lucas, at Mar Adentro Spa.

The Cabo San Lucas Organic Farmers’ Market is open on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, from 8:00 a.m. to noon. You can find everything for a tropical Cabo dinner, including fresh locally-caught fish, organic chicken and cheese from local farms, baked breads warm from the oven, pesto, hummus and of course all the organic fruit, veggies and herbs you could ask for. Bring the kids and snack on unbelievably sweet cherry tomatoes and succulent mangoes as you shop.

Sportsfishing Picks Up With Marlin, Dorado Near Bahia De Los Sueños

September 27, 2010

If you saw the boats coming in from the fishing villages from the 8th hole at Bahia de Los Sueños, you might have an inkling of the undersea booty that awaits the willing angler.

Marlin season is in full swing and boats are heading out from ports all along Cabo San Lucas. While you can land a big one at Snell Real Estate, even we have been amazed at the fishing nearby.

In fact, beginners’ luck seems to be taking hold with a number of American anglers on short, purposeful sportsfishing trips landing half-grander marlins and other prize catches in just a few hours. Expert fishermen know that it takes a little bit of luck and a lot of prime location.

Along with the marlin which could adorn many a mantle, catch dorado and tuna to bring home for an asado, or grilling, that will knock the socks off your friends and family. While we can’t bet on the numbers you’ll bring in, other sports fishermen have managed record catches in recent weeks.

It’s just another reason to consider making a home in a location like Bahia de Los Sueños. We offer the best-designed homes for you on a historic area of the Mexico sea coast, and you never know what remarkable amenities you might find. It only takes a quick glance at your neighbors’ catch to realize that the undersea treasures here rival our magnificent vistas.

The Tuna are running and fishing is truly fun for ALL ages in Cabo… especially about The Adios.

May the wind be at your back and the sand between your toes…

August 3, 2010

Skip the treadmill, run on the incredible beaches of Los Cabos!

Next time you lace up your running shoes, skip your community’s fully loaded fitness center and head for one of the beautiful Cabo San Lucas beaches instead.  Running in the sand is an excellent way to kick your workout into high gear. Not only does it help to develop strength and balance, but it’s also easier on your joints and burns more calories. Plus, you’ll get the chance to take in those spectacular Cabo views!
You know how hard it is to stagger through the sand with all of your beach gear – and the instability of the surface is exactly what makes running in sand such a great workout.  It forces your body to work harder and use more energy, both to propel yourself forward and to maintain your center of gravity. All that extra effort adds up to increased muscle strength and balance – and, even better, a higher calorie burn! Research has proven that running in sand burns between 20 and 80 more calories per mile and results in measurably stronger calves than running on a flat surface.
If you run in sand regularly, you’ll also develop better coordination.  As the sand shifts beneath you, your body automatically engages your core muscles to help you keep your balance. That means you’re getting an abs workout without a single crunch! Your shoulders, back, ankles, and arches also get in on the action. Over time, you’ll actually move more fluidly and gain more control over your body in every day life, making you less likely to fall – and more likely to catch yourself and avoid injury if you do.
Another benefit of running on the beach in Cabo is that it’s easier on your joints. Sand absorbs almost 100% of impact, which you’ve probably noticed if you’ve ever sliced a golf ball into a sand trap. Running along the shore gives your body a break from the strain of literally pounding the pavement, making those tell-tale aches in your back, knees, or hips a distant memory.
Of course, don’t forget the psychological benefits that come with running on Cabo’s beaches. If you run to relieve tension or to clear your mind, the magnificence of the ocean or the rhythmic sound of crashing waves can be very soothing. You’ll also get your recommended allowance of Vitamin D, which keeps bones strong and increases serotonin levels to improve your mood.  And you can’t deny the motivating effects of the parade of sunbathers you’ll pass as you zoom down the shoreline.
If you decide take your workout to the beach, invest in stable running shoes, and stay off the slope to prevent injury. Instead, run along the shoreline on firmly-packed sand and aim to land mid-foot. Keep yourself balanced by shortening your stride, leaning forward, and lifting your knees and arms higher. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll find yourself running to get your next workout on one of Cabo’s beautiful beaches!
