Whale Watching Numbers among the Many Amazing Things to Do in Cabo

November 11, 2011

Visit Los Cabos during the months of January through March and you’ll probably discover one of nature’s most majestic sights – pods of gray whales, among the largest forms of marine life, reaching their final destination in their annual southern migration.

The whales travel for months along the Pacific Coast, leaving the colder waters of their hunting grounds in the Northern Pacific around Siberia and Alaska to journey into the warmer waters around Baja California. There, the whales give birth to their young in the peaceful and sheltered waters of San Ignacio, Magdalena Bay, and other protected warm-water coves. Once the calves are birthed and weaned, the whales rest before beginning the long journey home as spring begins.

Los Cabos residents can spot the whales as they travel to the safe harbors of those peaceful lagoons farther down the Baja California coast. It’s not uncommon to see the whales spouting great plumes of water into the air off the Los Cabos coast. One of the more popular things to do in Cabo during this time of year, expeditions and whale-watching parties often follow the whales by sea and land, hoping to catch further glimpses of these magnificent animals.

Some devoted whale-watchers even get to see the whales at their most impressive – as they breach, or hurl their bodies from beneath the waves into the sea air.

Like the whales themselves, many visitors to the area make an annual pilgrimage to San Jose del Cabo in the hopes of catching a glimpse of these creatures as they return to the warm, secluded waters off Mexico. Snell Real Estate can help you find the Los Cabos home of your dreams and a warm, secluded seaside haven of your own for your journey south. Eco Warrior Comes to Shoppes at Palmilla

October 20, 2011

Over the years, James Pribram has made a name for himself as both a world-class surfer and an environmental activist.  After he suffered a life-threatening staph infection as a result of surfing contaminated waters, he has been on a crusade to preserve and protect the world’s oceans he loves and endangered surf breaks around the globe.

Snell Real Estate is honored to have Mr. Pribram join us at the Shoppes at Palmilla on November 7th, where he will share stories, photos and insights from his journeys around the world to protect fragile ocean waters and surf spots. From Mexico to the Canary Islands, Pribram has traveled far and wide promoting his clean water initiatives, recently leading a Laguna Beach, CA Beach Clean-Up along with One World One Ocean, and protesting a sewage dump that threatens to contaminate one of the most legendary surf breaks in Uluwatu, Bali.

Cabo Festivals in Cabo San Lucas

June 24, 2011

Cabo San Lucas is famous for its picturesque beaches, world-class scuba diving, the iconic El Arco de Cabo San Lucas, and its diverse and abundant marine life – but there’s so much more to this prime vacation destination. Whether you look to Snell Real Estate to help you find the perfect Cabo vacation rental or a luxury home all your own, when you buy property in Cabo San Lucas, you’re buying into one of the most beautiful, exciting, and culturally rich vacation spots in the world.

In the month of July, Cabo is home to not one but two different celebrations rooted in Mexican culture. The Fiesta of the Virgin of Carmen takes place on July 16 and honors the woman believed to be the protector of Mexico. On the day of the fiesta, the lively streets of downtown Cabo are filled with craft vendors, puppeteers, and parades that will delight visitors young and old. The celebration also caters to sport fishing enthusiasts with an annual fishing competition, as well as a traditional bullfight at Toros Stadium.

Two weeks after the Fiesta of the Virgin of Carmen is the Festival of St. James on July 25. Held to honor the Apostle credited with bringing Catholicism to Mexico, the entire city will be filled with parades that culminate with re-enacted battles at dusk in the town square. The excitement starts at 2pm, with shops closing early and revelers spilling out of cantinas throughout the vibrant downtown area.

With so much to see and do, Cabo San Lucas is the perfect place to find your dream getaway. Romancing Cabo San Lucas

February 21, 2011

Romance and Cabo San Lucas go hand-in-hand, and spectacular sunsets set the mood nearly every night of the year. This romantic getaway destination offers plenty of places to spread a blanket and a feast while you snuggle up and watch the sun slip away. Whether it’s your Golden Anniversary or you’re planning to propose, here are five perfect spots for a romantic sunset picnic in Cabo San Lucas:

1. San Jose’s Estuary and Bird Sanctuary is located a few minutes from downtown San Jose del Cabo near the Presidente Forum Resort. This quiet haven is home to 200 species of exotic birds, from pelicans to ospreys, along with lush flora and fauna that make it ideal for a sunset picnic. Admire an unobstructed view of the mountains while sipping champagne as the setting sun bathes the estuary in pinks and purples.

2. If you prefer your picnic on the beach, escape the masses and drive up Highway 19 to find stretches of deserted beaches – and plenty of privacy. Playa Las Cabrillas at Km. 81.5 offers picnic facilities, or you can follow the dirt road at Km. 85 to the rocky, picture-perfect beach at Playa El Cajoncito, then climb the hill to the west for great sunset views of the coastline. For complete solitude, head to Playa Migriño, the whale-watching beach marked by a sign at Km. 97, for your romantic sunset picnic.

3. Playa Las Viudas (formerly Widow’s Beach, now called Twin Dolphin Beach) is closer to town near the Cabo del Sol Golf Course, but still offers secluded picnic spots with picturesque views, jagged outcroppings, and tidal pools. Take the main highway to Km. 12 and turn off at the beach access sign, and follow the uneven road for about ½ mile until you find a quiet section of beach for your romantic dinner.

4. The Marina Cabo San Lucas is the center of water activities in the area – and the beautifully maintained grounds offer plenty of space to set up a sunset picnic. Find a patch of grass or a bench to spread out your feast, and people-watch as the boats and tourists come in from a busy day of boating, fishing, and snorkeling. When the sun begins to set, the whole area slows down to bask in the serenity and take in the spectacular show put on by nature.

5. Elevate your sunset picnic experience and take a drive into the Sierra La Laguna mountains. Follow Highway 1 north past the airport and Santa Anita, and you’ll see the sign for Los Naranjos road just after the turn off to the propane station. The road climbs into the mountains, presenting eye-popping views of gorgeous vistas and waterfalls, then flattens out and leads to a very narrow bend. Pull aside here, and set up your sunset picnic overlooking an expansive view of the Pacific Ocean in the distance. Summer rains sometimes make the road inaccessible beyond this point, but if it’s open, follow it to Pescadero and back to Highway 19.

Snell Real Estate: SCUBA Diving Tips – Cabo San Lucas Activities

January 27, 2011

With its crystal blue water and expansive variety of undersea life, Cabo San Lucas is a treasure trove for SCUBA divers. While your SCUBA certification training will give you the safety information, instructions and experience you need, here are a few tips to make exploring the underwater world easier when you’re ready to take the plunge!

Equalize. Before you go under water, close your mouth, pinch your nostrils closed and gently blow through your nose to pre-pressurize your ears. Start your decent feet first, equalize when your head goes underwater, and continue every few feet.

Use weights. Since the Sea of Cortez is saltwater, its density requires more weight to dive than freshwater. On the plus side, the water temperature ranges from 61′F – 75′F, allowing for a thinner bodysuit, which adds less positive buoyancy.

Be still. Flailing around consume more air – and also frightens the fish! Instead, keep your hands to your sides or extended in front of you, and glide smoothly forward using your fins.

Stay horizontal. When you’re vertical, you encounter greater water resistance and consume more air. Position yourself horizontally, kicking to propel yourself forward, not upward.

Relax. If a sudden surge causes you to feel seasick, take a deep breath, and move with the motion of the water. If that doesn’t help, stay calm and abort the dive.

Keep diving! Practice makes perfect, and the more you dive, the more comfortable you’ll be – and the more rewarding your experience will become.
